On Saturday, June 23, 2012, the Washington State Society, U.S.D. 1812, dedicated a monument to veterans of the War of 1812 at the Washelli Cemetery in Seattle, WA.  Researchers Marilyn and Homer Morrison, and Linda R. Lind, spent six years sifting through Washington pioneer records to find and prove the 16 names now inscribed on the black granite monument.

The U.S.D. 1812 was assisted in the dedication ceremony by the Washington State Society SAR Color Guard and Rifle Team under the direction of Col. Bob O’Neal.   SAR member Stan Wills donated a 15-star/striped U.S. Flag flown over Ft. McHenry to the cemetery and it was slowly raised as soloist Vicki Day Melton sang the National Anthem.  After the monument was unveiled, Margaret Questad, State 1st Vice Regent, read the names on the monument and following each name, the John Herr of the SAR, rang the replica Liberty Bell.  The SAR Rifle Team then fired a round of musket shot and echo taps was played by Col. Bob O’Neal and Glenn Ledbetter of a local VFW.  After a brief interlude for photos, the program continued in the nearby Washelli chapel.

A portion of Washington State Governor Gregoire’s Proclamation for the anniversary of the declaration of the War of 1812 was read during the service.  Spirit of 1812 Award medals were presented to Marilyn and Homer Morrison for their dedicated research efforts on the project.  A Research Summary Booklet was presented to Donald Lachman of the Seattle Area Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs who was standing in for the State Director, John Lee.  Guest speaker,  Jerry Handfield, the Washington State Archivist, spoke on “Mighty Earthquakes, Rivers, Revolutions and the War of 1812:  Important Lessons for the State of Washington.”

State President, Linda Rae Lind, showed slides about the 16 veterans and acknowledged descendants of those men who were attending the ceremony.  Soloist Vicki Day Melton then sang “America, the Beautiful.” Kimberly Cambern, Rainier DAR Chapter 1st Vice Regent, presented the society with a copy of their newly published book about the War of 1812 and some of their members’ ancestors who served.  State Chaplain, Dorothy Hayden, closed the ceremonies.  A reception followed in a nearby room.  Over 100 people attended the event.
