American prisoners at Dartmoor who helped build this church. 271 American seamen
died here and are buried in the cemetery adjacent to this church.

Battle of Baltimore Shows Star Spangled Banner

Is Still There over Ft. McHenry

The Battle of Baltimore fought September 13-14, 1814, was one of the turning points in the War of 1812. Here, American forces warded off a British sea invasion of the port of Baltimore , Maryland . The American defense of Baltimore ’s Fort McHenry in this battle inspired Francis Scott Key to compose the poem which became the national anthem of the United States : The Star-Spangled Banner.
